JOHOR BAHRU, 17 December – With the vision to create a future ready metropolis, Johor Bahru has taken a significant step forward in its transformation with the conclusion of the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) Urban Lab. The event spearheaded by Johor Corporation’s (JCorp) real estate and infrastructure division, JLand Group (JLG), unveiled a new video at KOMTAR JBCC which showcased the immense potential of the business district.
The closing ceremony was attended by Menteri Besar Johor Yang Amat Berhorma (YAB) Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi who is also the Chairman of JCorp; Johor State Exco Member for Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs & Human Resources YB Lee Ting Han; Johor Bahru City Council Mayor, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Haji, Mohd Noorazm Dato’ Haji Osman; Deputy State Secretary (Development) of Johor State Economic Planning Division Yang Berhormat Dato’ Haji Asman Shah Abd. Rahman; JCorp President and Chief Executive Yang Berbahagia Datuk Syed Mohamed Syed Ibrahim; Director of the Real Estate & Infrastructure Division of JCorp and Deputy Chairman of JLG, Datuk Sr. Akmal Ahmad together with other JCorp’s board of directors and JCorp and JLG’s senior management.
Highlighting the transformative vision for Johor Bahru, Menteri Besar of Johor and Chairman of JCorp, YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi, remarked, “IIBD is more than just a project; it represents Johor Bahru’s commitment to a future built on innovation, creativity, tradition, community, and sustainability. The Urban Lab and the launch of the IIBD video set a new benchmark in our efforts to elevate Johor Bahru into a globally recognised metropolis.”
Spanning 240 acres in the heart of Johor Bahru, IIBD is strategically positioned at the “Southern Gateway of Peninsular Malaysia”. The district’s comprehensive transformation plan prioritises in ensuring it becomes a “Liveable and Loveable Hub” that attracts businesses and investors from various sectors, including tech start-ups and research institutions.
As an integral component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), IIBD’s potential is further strengthened by the anticipated completion of the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) by late 2026.
These high-impact initiatives position IIBD as a catalyst for urban rejuvenation and enhanced regional connectivity, paving the way for sustainable economic growth.
The IIBD Urban Lab, which ran successfully from 22 November to 15 December 2024, served as an interactive platform for stakeholders and the community to contribute ideas to the district’s comprehensive rejuvenation plan. The programme featured various activities, including dialogues and community engagement events such as “Plogging” and the “JB Car Free Morning”, held in collaboration with the Johor Bahru
City Council (MBJB).
During his visit to the Urban Lab, YAB Menteri Besar Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi also engaged with JLG representatives and explored interactive exhibits, emphasising the importance of creativity, collaboration, and open dialogue in shaping IIBD into an inclusive and liveable hub.
Director of the Real Estate & Infrastructure Division of JCorp and Deputy Chairman of JLG, Yang Berbahagia Datuk Sr. Akmal Ahmad, noted, “The IIBD Urban Lab has been an excellent platform for engaging with the community and gathering feedback to shape the future of IIBD. We are confident that IIBD will not only breathe new life into Johor Bahru’s city centre but also elevate its global standing.”
The event’s highlight was the official launch of the IIBD video, a captivating narrative showcasing IIBD’s strategic location and its integration of economic opportunities, cultural diversity, and sustainability. The video envisions IIBD as a premier international destination.
Earlier this year, on 24 March 2024, JLG announced an exclusive postal code, “80888”, for the entire IIBD area, effective January 2025. This unique identifier aims to promote IIBD as a premier destination and reinforce its position as a dynamic economic hub. Collectively, these efforts support Johor Bahru’s evolution as a thriving economic power and a model of balanced, inclusive urban development.
